PASSIVATION

Passivation is the removal of free irons or iron-compounds from the surface of stainless steel

using a chemical dissolution most typically by a treatment with an acid solution that will

remove the surface contamination.

Advantages:

  • Delays or prevents rusting of stainless steel

  • Provides a chemically clean surface

  • Improves cleanliness for medical or computer environments

  • Has no dimensional impact

  • Offered in hexavalent and RoHS compliant chemistries

  • Removes foreign contaminants or impurities on the surface of the material

  • Most commonly used in medical, aerospace, connector, military/defense, and electronics industries

  • Prepares primary surface for the secondary finish

  • Nadcap certified

  • Offered in RoHS

Stainless Steel Passivation Helps to Minimize Corrosion

Iron compounds and iron ions on the surface of stainless steel (normally an alloy of carbon and iron) can rust rapidly when even a minimal amount of water is present. Passivation removes these spare ions reducing this risk. In addition, passivation forms a passive oxide layer on stainless steel surfaces. This oxide layer resists corrosion, which is why passivation is used so widely on stainless steel parts. Ideal as part of the preparation of component surfaces for later painting or plating, passivation involves the relevant components being dipped in a chemical solution that reacts with spare iron ions to remove them from the product’s surface.

Stainless Steel Passivation Benefits

The key reason for putting stainless steel components through a passivation process is to remove spare iron ions and to form a passive oxide layer, thereby reducing the risk of corrosion. Other advantages include increased cleanliness, the removal of chemical contaminants and preparation of the surface ready for painting or plating. If you want components that are extremely corrosion resistant and that can take a high-quality finish successfully, passivation is an important step in the process.
