Iron compounds and iron ions on the surface of stainless steel (normally an alloy of carbon and iron) can rust rapidly when even a minimal amount of water is present. Passivation removes these spare ions reducing this risk. In addition, passivation forms a passive oxide layer on stainless steel surfaces. This oxide layer resists corrosion, which is why passivation is used so widely on stainless steel parts.
